Description of the project Rare earth elements (REE) and transition metals (TM) show interesting optical properties including light conversion in UV-Vis-IR regions. Many AII-BVI semiconductors (i.e. CdTe, CdS, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnO) were already tested for their usability in optoelectronic devices. Therefore, the goal of this project is to achieve controlled light conversion in REE/TM doped AII-BVI semiconductors, as well as to study the changes in these semiconductors caused by REE/TM doping and to examine their optical properties.

I also tried to deduce structural properties and chemical composition from photoluminescence measurements, Raman and EDX spectra, XRD diffractograms, conductivity and electro-magnetic measurements (e.g. with Hall-measurement system) or fits for PIXE (Particles Induced X-Ray Emission) results.

I learned a few of them during my first internship in Ruhr-University Bochum (16.04-26.05 2019). I gained particular experience in implantation of Transition Metals (TMs) into mixed IIA-VIB crystals and thermal annealing of samples.

Characteristics and main objectives of the research project:

·                    Preparation of mixed and/or doped bulk crystals with chosen chemical composition both by Bridgmann-Stockbarger method and chemical bath deposition (for thin films)

·                    Preparation of thin films semiconductors by the chemical bath deposition technique

·                    Examination of chemical, structural and optical properties of as-grown samples obtained in those methods

·                    Doping of samples by ions implantation and/or wet-chemical methods with the examination of optical properties post modification

The project is conducted in cooperation with Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany
