A new formation mechanism for low surface-brightness galaxies and implications for dark matter

Investigator

Title of the project A new formation mechanism for low surface-brightness galaxies and implications for dark matter
Primary and secondary scientific disciplines astronomy, physics
Description of the project Characteristics and main objectives of the research project:

·                    My project is a heavy numerical approach to simulate a realistic patch of the Universe and analyse the structures in this area. We utilise and combine existing cosmological software to construct an own pipeline which will be easily accessible for the scientific community.

·                    We want to study the formation and evolution of a particular type of galaxies in the underdense regions of our Universe.

·                    The hypothesis is that large, dim galaxies are more likely to form in underdense regions. First, highly tentative results seem to not support our hypothesis.

·                    These galaxies are recently heavily discussed, it is not clear if their formation is in contrast to the current cosmological standard model. We aim to make a contribution to see if these galaxies are typical galaxies forming in underdense regions or if their formation mechanism is more complicated.

The project is conducted in cooperation with:
