Title of the project: Pious gifts in medieval Stockholm in the context of Baltic towns, c. 1315–1530

The research project will constitute the first comprehensive and comparative study of pious gifts in late medieval Stockholm. It aims to determine whether these material gifts devoted for pious purposes were merely a direct reception of universal European patterns, an adaptation of these patterns to local conditions, or whether original forms of religious foundations and donations emerged in the town.

To discuss this problem, the situation in Stockholm will be compared with the data collected and analyzed by scholars regarding other Baltic towns, which will enable a proper assessment of the level of uniqueness and prevalence of pious practices in Stockholm.

The project will be implemented in cooperation with the Centre for Medieval Studies at Stockholm University.
